We have all heard the saying “Let Go and Let God.” But, sometimes it feels as though no matter where we go, the past follows us. Past situations, past circumstances, past memories. Letting go of the past can be such a challenge if you don’t have Jesus, because there is nothing for you to cross over to. The cross, however, is the means away from your past into a new future, all else is destined to fail.

Trust me, I’ve read most of those self help books about turning your life around and changing your thinking, but to me, their foundation was often shaky. They would say “believe you can do it!”, but I would think “there’s no reason for me to believe I can do it…” My determination was never enough to bring change. However, now I believe I can do it! I believe it because God said it and He made me. He also sent Jesus to redeem me. I know of no other way but through Him. Here are two important ways through Jesus that we can let go of the past.

Hebrews 8:12 – For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

Hey, you can forgive and forget. You don’t need to hold on to the injustices in your life, God is able to provide justice for you in each situation and circumstance, even if it doesn’t look the way you expect, or happen as soon as you want. Jesus is able to take all of the things that Satan meant for harm and use them for good in your life.

So, forgive. God says He remembers our sins no more. You can reach a point where you remember the sins of a person who has wronged you no more.

Trust in Jesus and allow His blood to cover the offenses and wash away your hurt.

Then you can truly move on, and leave the past in the past. You don’t need the burden of hurt and torment to follow you for the rest of your life and into your brand new future with Christ.

2Your new identity

2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Jesus said that if you are in Christ, ALL things become new. Guess what, that means a new personality, a new outlook, a new future, a new everything. More than that, because this is God’s gift to you, you have full permission to kick out anything that doesn’t look like new, even if you have been “in Christ” for many years.

If you see an old habit, kick it out in Jesus name! It has no authority over you because of what Jesus has done. He said that sin shall have NO dominion over you (Romans 6:14). I believe that it’s as easy as tearing a page out of a book, crumpling it, and throwing it away.

Get rid of the old things in your life and step into this new life that God has for you.

Your new life may be strange to adjust to but that can become easier the more you abide in Jesus, fill yourself with His truth and renew your mind!

Moving on and breaking free from the things of the past can be very simple. Ask Jesus to show you who you are in Him today. You may think you are lazy, useless and filthy, but He will show you who you were really created to be. And, being who you were made to be in Him, will suit you much more than being who Satan wants you to become.

Let go today and move into the bright future of Jesus Christ.

A Christian can at times come across as a bit schizophrenic.. But trust me, schizophrenia is not your issue. Christians however do have the challenge of living out their new life rather than their old life. It’s okay, and it happens, but it gets easy. After you have sown the word of God in your heart and grown in Him, you will be unshakeable. That’s why we have Jesus. He will help you to continue to press forward and renew your mind.

When the past rises up to haunt you with familiar things, look into Jesus’ mirror! Don’t be someone who forgets who they are. You can actively fight against the voices and lies. You must forget the things that are behind and PRESS forward to the finish line with Jesus.
