On January 1st 1995, Trinidad passed a law making it mandatory to wear seatbelts while driving. Everyone had to ensure that their vehicles were equipped with seatbelts in the front seats. The seatbelt legislation stated that motorists caught without their seatbelts would pay a fine of $500. This prompted thousands of persons, including myself, to visit the infamous local “Bamboo Used Car Parts Dealers” to get a pair of seatbelts for older model vehicles.
There wasn’t a great deal of policing on the roads at that time, so after a couple of months the tendency to wear the seatbelt was relaxed and most of the drivers eventually stopped using it. I never wore mine unless there was a police road-block in progress.
My seatbelt was usually dirty and it used to stain my shirts, due to the lack of use and cleaning.
Last year, the fine for not wearing seat belts was increased significantly to: $2,000 for a first time offence and $4,000 for the second offence. I have noticed that since then, many more people are now using their seatbelts, but are they doing it for the right reason? I myself was guilty of buckling up only to avoid the charge, until one day I saw a really, really bad accident on the highway. Four people were thrown out of their vehicles, each one lay covered with a black garbage bag on the side of the road. The news indicated that the occupants of the vehicles were not wearing their seatbelts. If they had been, there is a good chance that these passengers might still be alive today.
This is what I learnt from that particular accident… I saw how easy it was to lose your life. I also understood that the seatbelt could save your life. Hence, it is the reason I now buckle up whenever I am driving. It is not because of the penalty being imposed, but the fact that I can lose my life like those people did in that tragic accident.
The law was put in effect to protect us from road carnage, but so often, many of us like to do our own thing and we refuse to obey the law.
Likewise, God’s Laws “the Ten Commandments” were given to show us what sin is.
None of us have ever kept all the Commandments. Put yourself to the test and see the results. Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever taken something that was not yours? Have you ever called God’s name in vain? These are just three of the Ten Commandments and we have all broken them.
Trust me, we have all sinned. The Bible says: “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord and that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 6:23) But God loves us so much; He knew that we couldn’t keep the law on our own, so He sent His Son Jesus Christ. Instead of us paying for our sins and facing eternal death, Jesus took our place and died for us. (1 John 4:9) “In this was manifested the love of God towards us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” (John 3:17) “For God sent not His Son into the world not to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.”
Jesus Christ is like our seatbelt.
In other words, He can save our lives but only if we put Him on and only if we repent and invite Him into our lives, to be our Lord and Savior. Are you trying to obey the laws of God for the right reason? If you didn’t know the reason that Jesus left His throne in heaven and came down to the earth, it would be hard for you to keep the commandments. Ask yourself, are you struggling to keep the laws so that you will not go to hell?
Or are you doing it because you love the Lord? Well, when you truly understand the love of God, you will appreciate His laws.
(Psalm 119:165) “Great peace have they who love Your law, and nothing can make them stumble.”
It is this simple, if you really love Him, you will automatically keep His commandments. When you are tempted to sin, He will remind you of the price He had to pay for your sins and that will convict you and change your desire towards sin. You may not be sinless, but indeed you will sin less and it will eventually become natural for you to obey His laws. You will keep the laws because you genuinely love Jesus Christ.
We have a choice to make, between life and death.
Should we take a chance and not wear our seatbelts? Do we really know what is going to happen out there on those busy roads with those crazy drivers? Or should we take the safe approach and put on our seatbelts? When you die, God is not interested in what religion you belonged to or how much money you made. All He wants to know is what did with His Son, Jesus Christ, whom He sent to die for you. Did you accept Him or did you reject Him? There is only one way to the Father and that is through Jesus Christ.
(John 14:6) Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”. Are you going to hold out to see how long you can go on without Jesus in your life and risk the chance of dying without Him? Or are you going to make that decision now to put on Jesus Christ as your Saviour and guarantee making it to heaven? Time is running out, so I encourage you to choose Jesus now!
