It’s probably not a complicated thing for you to figure out who is influencing your life negatively, if you are honest with yourself. Yet, somehow, friendship is one of the areas Christians struggle with the most.
Maybe it’s because each human being has a desire to be accepted. Or, maybe it’s because we believe that having friends will solve our problems. No matter what it is, it’s important to know that who your friends are matters.
Whether you like it or not, the truth is that people rub off on us.
Chances are that the people you surround yourself with are the people who you will end up talking like, thinking like and relating to others like.
Many Christians think that they will be able to guard themselves from the behavior of their close friends, but many times it doesn’t happen that way.
It’s so important to surround yourself with people who have a passion for God, if that’s your desire too, or else you will end up in the same things that they are involved in.
Christians also fall for the lie that sticking around worldly people will bring the worldly people to God. I’d like to suggest that a more effective way is separating yourself from your friends if you want to bring them to God. That way they will see who God really is. They will see that He desires holiness and purity and then they will be free to choose God for the truth of who He is.
I know it’s hard to find friends who are on fire for God, but you can’t make friends an idol in your life.
You’ve got to be willing to stand alone for a season and wait on the Lord.
You’ve got to be willing to live the ‘no compromise’ life.
The bible shows us an example of what a godly friendship looks like through David and Jonathan.
Before David even came on the scene, we see an instance where Jonathan sneaks out into the night with one other man and with the words “our God will fight for us” destroys an entire army. We all know that David had this same spirit in him in every battle he fought from Goliath onward. So, I believe that that is why they had such a beautiful friendship.
God truly was first in their friendship, even to the point that Jonathan humbled himself to the kingship of David that God’s will would be done.
A godly friendship can be the most beautiful thing, but friendships in the world usually leave you betrayed and broken hearted.
Of course, however, the ultimate friend to have is God who loves you and is on your side. Then you will experience godly beauty and peace in your other friendships.
