Halloween is now being embraced and accepted by many in the Body of Christ. Churches are even being converted to “Haunted Houses” to celebrate the darkest, spookiest holiday of the year. There are ongoing debates on whether a believer should participate in such an event. People are also trying to discover the origins of Halloween to determine an appropriate Christian response.
We don’t need to know the origins of an event whose participants dress up as demons, witches, goblins, zombies and all manner of demonic creatures, to know something is wrong. Why in the world would you want your precious child to partake in such a dark event.
A major part of Halloween is the promotion of the spirit of fear, from creepy costumes to haunted houses, Halloween aims to scare its participants silly.
I have heard preachers claim that by telling your child not to participate in Halloween you will be essentially putting a spirit of fear in them. I plan to keep my child from the “Playboy Mansion”, not because I am afraid of a spirit of lust jumping on them but because I don’t want to expose them to sin and wickedness. It is the job of a parent to protect the young vulnerable minds of their children. Exposing my child to a live horror movie to me, is not the best parenting advice.
Here is what the Word of God instructs:
“Flee fornication.” 1 Corinthians 6:18 – A responsible parent will keep their children away from lustful movies, events and celebration.
“Abstain from every form of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22
“Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.” Ephesians 5:11
You may say, “But I can wear a godly costume…”, of course you can. Your entire church can dress up as angels and go minister to people during Halloween. It is a question of motive and what you are participating in. God does not want us to participate in the deeds of darkness but rather to expose them.
The problem is in the participation of an event that glorifies darkness.
There are those who claim that Halloween is just like any other day and that satan has no special power on that day. They see it as harmless fun and don’t see what all the fuss is about. These people are ignorant of the demonic realm. Demonic beings need human agreement and will to affect the earth. Halloween presents the perfect opportunity for the demonic realm, as there is an increased participation in darkness. So the day is not special or is of any unique consequence for the true believer in Jesus Christ. The believer has absolute power over satan on any day and on satan’s best day. However, the day holds unique significance in the demonic realm because of the increased agreement of man on the earth.
As believers, every day belongs to the Lord and Halloween is no different.
Halloween is an opportunity for believers to present the Gospel message. Many churches and believers are seizing the opportunity and using the event to effectively reach others for Christ. I spoke to one preacher who plans to create an elaborate set, showing a grave, death and sin but also depicting the resurrection of Christ – now that’s awesome. Other churches go to the extreme of “Hell house” evangelism to frighten their visitors into Heaven – oh boy! I heard of other believers who give out gospel tracts with candy – amen.
As believers, we don’t run from the devil, we are definitely not in our homes hiding.
There are those who just don’t want to participate in foolishness – God bless you! To those of you who choose just to stay home and avoid all of the nonsense – peace to you. For those of you who will go into the battlefield and preach the gospel during the event – grace be multiplied to you. However, for those of you who willfully participate in such an ungodly event, I would encourage you to consider and turn from this dark event, it is not of God and the glorification of Satan.
