Movies like Armageddon, The Day the Earth Stood Still and The War of the Worlds all capture something that strikes a chord with movie audiences. There is a prevailing sense that something strange, unique or big is about to happen on the world’s stage. Let us consider a few reasons from the Bible why we may be indeed living in the last days.
Increase in Knowledge
In the book of Daniel we read, “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Daniel 12:4
Notice that the prophecy states that all these things will happen at “the time of the end”. We have never had a time since the existence of the world where we have had such an increase in “knowledge” as in the last 40 years.
The invention of the PC and the Internet has certainly given rise to a rapid increase and dissemination of knowledge.
In fact, our economy is often referred to as a “knowledge economy”. Additionally, global travel and the ability to go to and fro have significantly increased with air travel. If we are to take Daniel at his word, our only conclusion is that we are at “the time of the end”.
Wars, Earthquakes, Pestilence and Famine
From the very mouth of Jesus we have some of the most definitive prophecies about the last days.
“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.” Matt 24:6-8
We have had numerous wars such as the Iraq war, Congo Wars, Palestinian Conflict and rumours of wars such as North Korea and Iran. Pestilences and diseases are becoming more prevalent such as Sars, Bird flu and now Swine flu. Earthquakes have occurred with disastrous effects such as the tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004 that killed more than 200,000 people. In 2005, the World Bank reported that almost 1.4 billion people (out of less than 7 billion people) lived below the international poverty line, earning less than $1.25 per day – shocking! If we are to take Jesus at His word (the wise thing to do), our only conclusion is that we are in the last days.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Jerusalem
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” Zechariah 12:3-4
What is the focus on the entire world now? What nation is a burdensome stone to the entire world now? The bible was written thousands of years ago, why not France, Spain, Barbados or England – why Jerusalem? Why does Jerusalem still exist? Why is it still dominating the world news? This is truly an undeniable example of the prophetic accuracy of the Bible.
A little piece of land on the earth is the center of the world’s attention – amazing!
The Middle East has oil and wealth that the world wants and the Middle East for the most part want the Jews (the nation of Israel) out of Jerusalem. As a result, most of the world is against the Jews to gain favour with the Middle East and for spiritual reasons. 911 occurred because of America’s support for the Jews. Iran is in the news because of the possibility that they could develop a nuclear weapon to strike Israel. The Palestinian conflict is, at its core, a battle for Jerusalem. It seems like all roads lead to Jerusalem the center of the world.
The Coming World War, Israel and the Return of Jesus Christ
“For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” Zechariah 14:2-4
The United Nations, vote after vote, is against Israel; it is only a matter of time before the world unites to go after Israel. Are you ready? Jesus is coming back soon.
The hatred of the world for the Jews and its desire to conquer the Lord’s city, shall be the world’s undoing. All the nations of the earth shall gather to destroy Israel in the city of Jerusalem. Planes, tanks, armies shall surround Jerusalem and just when the world thinks it has the battle won; the Heavens shall burst open as Jesus Christ splits the sky with the armies of Heaven. When all seems to be lost, the King of Glory will step in to defend his people and Jerusalem.
And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there. 1 Kings 11:36
Is Iran the Catalyst?
What will happen if Israel strikes Iran who is developing nuclear capabilities? This can happen at any time.
“It is my gut feeling that Iran would like to have the technology to enable it to have nuclear weapons,” ElBaradei told the BBC. “They want to send a message to their neighbors, to the rest of the world, ‘don’t mess with us.'” International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei
If Iran develops nuclear missiles, it leaves Israel no choice but to launch a preemptive attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Will this be the catalyst that will bring the world together against Israel? Will Russia who is supplying the nuclear technology to Iran, rise up against Israel and lead the world against Israel? Will Obama take a diplomatic approach and sit by and do nothing militarily?
My friend, Jesus is coming back soon and He loves you dearly. Jesus is asking you a simple question, “Do you want Him or sin?” I encourage you today to repent from you sin and surrender your life to Jesus Christ. He paid the penalty for your sins on the Cross that you will go to Heaven. So I encourage you today, trade your sin for his righteousness at the foot of the Cross.
