There is no end to heresies circulating in the church today. A common heresy now basically states that everyone is born again but just does not know it or believe it. This heresy teaches that we are already new creatures but preachers are sent to bring us out of our ignorance.
Let’s us explore this error:
Firstly, it is a direct accusation on the character of God and His Judgment. In an attempt to make God appear more loving, this error attributes extreme wickedness to God. God is going to send people to hell not because of their wickedness but because they are sons who were ignorant or did not believe. You would think then that judgment day would be the great revealing. God would hug them and say – you are my son and I changed your nature but you just did not know it or believe. Rather, this heresy implies that God will say – you are my son, now go to hell for your ignorance.
Let us look to God’s word for clarification on this matter:
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
Notice – Be not deceived! God didn’t say that the ignorant shall not inherit the kingdom of God but rather those who do wicked things.
Ephesians 2:3 “Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by NATURE the children of wrath, even as others.”
Paul shows in Ephesians that we had a nature problem and hence we need a nature solution.
Peter puts it this way:
2 Peter 1:4
“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the DIVINE NATURE, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
Jesus is the True Vine and we are the branches, through faith we attach to this Vine and all of its essence or nature flows through us.
We are partakers of the divine nature of God through faith.
Similarly, if we were cut off from this True Vine we will wither, rotten and die. Being born again is about a new nature flowing through us – the nature of Christ.
Does an unbeliever have this nature flowing through him? Is an unbeliever born again and just does not know it? The answer is a big No! and double No! This is because an unbeliever does not have Christ or His Spirit. This new nature flows from God.
Paul puts it this way when referring to the Jews and the Gentiles:
“For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the GOODNESS and SEVERITY of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, IF THOU CONTINUE in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?”
A Big “IF” there!
Do you notice Paul said we were wild by nature and contrary to God’s nature? Both Jews and Gentiles are branches and without the True Vine would wither and die. When someone believes the Gospel they get grafted into Christ and the nature of Christ flows through them. What if someone did not believe that Gospel? Well, their nature is wild and filled with disobedience to God. Simply, they are not connected to God. That is why you need to be born again to see the things of God. Jesus said this new birth is needed to enter into the kingdom of God.
Salvation is our entrance into a relationship with all of the essence and nutrients of Christ, the True Vine.
Here is how Paul puts it:
Ephesians 2:2 “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience”
Ephesians 5:6 “Let no man deceive you with VAIN WORDS, for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.”
Colossians 3:6 “For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.”
“We all are new creatures, everyone is one in Christ, everyone is born again” – vain words if you find yourself in Hell!
What is the Judgment Seat of Christ?
It is where the goodness and severity of God are on display. Severity?
Here is what Paul says:
2 Cor 5:9-11 “Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must ALL appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the TERROR of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.”
Grace Twisters can spin, twist, distort the Bible only for those who refuse to read the Bible. Do you notice the use of the word TERROR in referring to the Judgment Seat of Christ? Note, this is not the White Throne Judgment. The word “terror” is the Greek word “phobos” meaning exceeding fear! Why terror? Well it goes back to what Paul was saying about the goodness and severity of God.
The Judgment Seat of Christ is where we will be accepted or rejected by Jesus. MANY who claim to be in Christ will be forever cut off. MANY will say, Lord… did I not… and Jesus will say, “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.”
In that day, many preachers will be hated and will have to hide and run in Hell. All the sayings of “I am the righteousness of God, I am a new creature, I am a spirit, I am born again, I am a Christian…” will not matter but will be vain words!
How can you know if you are indeed in Christ and connected to the True Vine?
How do you know if you are connected to a mango tree? How do you know if you are connected to an orange tree?
If you claim to be connected to a mango tree but are only bearing apples, are you telling the truth?
Bearing righteousness should be natural to a believer.
“But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: HEREBY KNOW WE THAT WE ARE IN HIM. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” I John 2:5-6
This is how we know that we are in Him- If you say “I have a righteous nature,” well the proof is in the living. Nature comes first but will always be manifested in our walk.
John puts it this way:
“Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.” 1 John 3:7
Why the warning from John about deception? Where is John stressing? He is stressing on our Christian walk and the things we do in the flesh.
When you receive Christ, you are born again, connected to the True Vine or joined to the Spirit of God. You are a new creature and have a new nature but all of this flows from the Holy Spirit or Christ in us. We are partakers of Christ. You can be grafted in through faith but also cut off through unbelief. Words will mean nothing to you if you are in Hell. You must continue in the goodness of Christ by believing in the righteousness of Christ.
Surely, confessing Christ as your righteousness with no intention of living or desiring righteousness is only hypocrisy in disguise.
All your confessions of faith will not matter when your life clearly shows you are a hypocrite and an unbeliever.
You must repent and turn from your wickedness and receive God’s forgiveness, believe you have been made a new creature and righteous. Now simply continue in Christ and His goodness.
Colossians 2:6 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.”
The same way you got saved, is how you stay saved.
What will God do to people who call themselves believers but live in sin with no sincere repentance?
Matthew 24:51 “And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
What will the Lord do? Cut him asunder. Nothing gives greater testimony to our faith than our works. It is difference from fleshly works that people trust in but rather because we believe, we do. It is natural and a natural outworking of your faith.
Sadly at the Judgment Seat of Christ, many will find out that faith without works is dead. Their lives will testify louder than their words that they never knew Christ.
