Long before Christianity or any other religion existed there were “The Figians.” Figianity is the oldest religion on the face of the earth.

Religion is man’s response to sin.

Somewhere deep down we know that by an act of our freewill we have violated our consciences – we have sinned. There is a sense that we need to make up for what we have done wrong in order to appease a Supreme Being. The root of every religion is essentially an attempt to be made right by our own good works.

Okay, back to the Figians, here is how it started. Adam and Even sinned and were afraid as they realized they were naked. They wanted to cover their nakedness, so they made the very first clothing on the earth. The Book of Genesis records Adam and Eve’s response to disobeying God.

“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Genesis 3:7

You see where I get the Figians from – lol.

Figianity is our attempt to cover our nakedness by own righteous acts.

So Adam and Eve became tailors in the Garden. Long before there was Nike, Reebok and Adidas, fig leaves were in fashion. I guess you can say it was a “Banana Republic!”

Adam and Eve’s fig leaves did not really work. When the voice of God came walking in the Garden, the fig leaves were not sufficient so they dived into the bushes. That’s the second religion on the earth. I call them the “Bushamites” – but thank God that’s another discussion.

Adam and Eve saw God’s holiness but they didn’t have a deep revelation of His love. If only they knew how awesome God is, they would have dared to step out of the bushes naked and say, “Daddy, we messed up…” The Bible says that God took off the fig leaves and covered them with the skin of an animal. This was the first demonstration of mercy and grace.

This animal represented the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who takes away the sins of the world.

Are you wearing your own brand of fig leaves? Do you think that your good works are enough to make you right in God’s eyes? I have good news for you – you don’t need fig leaves when you have God’s love. You can clothe yourself with the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the skin of the Lamb of God. Jesus was mocked, beaten, slapped, pierce, dragged and nailed for your sins; so that you will never have to pay for your sins. His skin was whipped off his back so that you will never be naked.

Jesus on the Cross demonstrated God’s unconditional love to humanity.

Now if we ever find ourselves naked and full of shame, we don’t have to run and hide from God. Rather, we run to Him in all our nakedness and our Heavenly Father wraps His arms of love around us and says, “I got you…” He clothes us in the robe of righteousness purchased for us by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Now as believers, we don’t do good works to be saved but rather we do good works because we have fallen in love with God. He has loved us first and we have fallen in love with Him.

No more fig leaves for me, what about you?
