All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16
The only Bible in the early church was the Old Testament and it was enough to teach them how to live righteously. A righteous person in nature rejoices in righteousness and would gladly receive righteous instructions.
When God says, “Don’t commit adultery” or Paul teaches, “To honor our parents”, they are not saying to do good works to become righteous. However, they are saying, this is what righteous actions look like.
John says, ” Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.”
If you are righteous by nature, you will rejoice in righteousness and holiness. If you are righteous by nature, you will do righteousness.
If a preacher uses grace or the love of God to attack the instructions of the law, then that preacher may be confused, ignorant or deceived. A preacher may use the New Covenant and grace to reveal God’s love and to tear down a legal system that says we can make ourselves righteous by good works. However, if that preacher speaks badly of the instructions of the law, then they are speaking badly about righteous living. Old Testament or New, “don’t commit adultery” is good advice and instruction!
If a preacher then uses grace to defend sin, it is either Satan or man (influenced by Satan) who is now inspiring that preacher.
These preachers very rarely or never say, “stop sinning” or “don’t do that” or “this is wrong”. They believe that is making you sin conscious. I once told one of those preachers, “Life is in the living”. I have a daughter and I care about the quality of life she experiences, so like any good parent I have many instructions, warnings and rebukes for her. She receives them because she knows I love her and want the best for her. My love for her is unconditional but it is this very love that instructs her in righteous living.
We see this love in the early church where the Holy Spirit gave instructions: “For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well.” Acts 15:28-29
I will encourage you to look out for any preacher that defends sin and has the audacity to use of all things, the love of God and the grace of God to defend it!
Sin is Satan’s works and will empower the enemy in your life. These preachers are caught up in doctrines and not a life in Christ. Watch, be on guard and try them that call themselves ministers of Christ. If they lead you to love Jesus and depart from iniquity – that’s great. However, if they speak of God’s love but not against sin – run!
Hey, did you see that mashed up, beaten, bleeding, nailed piece of flesh hanging on the Cross? Sin did that to Him. Jesus died for your sins. Sin is no joking matter. Jesus died to set you free from sin. You are free when you stop sinning. It is an insult to the Spirit of Grace to trample on the Blood of Jesus by sinning with a holy smile. Hey, go and sin no more and if you sin, repent and don’t dwell in sin. You have got the power!
