Let generational sins stop at the generation BEFORE you or in YOUR generation! Don’t live in ways that you would not want your children and grandchildren to follow. Through one man, Adam, sin entered the world and we were ALL affected. (Romans 5:12)
It is amazing how we are glad when our children inherit our beauty or our intelligence.
There are no complaints! However, we must understand that we don’t only pass down physical and mental strengths and weakness; we also pass down spiritual and emotional strengths and weaknesses.
How many families, for example, struggle, generation after generation with premarital sex, teenage pregnancy, adultery/unfaithfulness? How many have divorcees from one generation to the next? Our children don’t only inherit our good looks and intelligence but we create areas of great struggle in their lives as we habitually sin in certain areas. The most common types of generational sins we speak on are premarital sex, adultery (extramarital affairs), divorce, outbursts of anger, substance abuse/addiction and lying. However, there are many other areas like pride, selfishness, rebellion, self-righteousness etc. (See Galatians 5:19-21)
Most of us can look at our families and identify specific spiritual and emotional strengths and weaknesses, which may span generations.
When I looked at both sides of my own family, I identified certain struggles, and my siblings and I decided that those things had to stop in our generation. We did not want our children to struggle with lust and all that it brought, premarital sex, adultery etc. Even though we didn’t understand then as much as we do now, obeying Jesus in every area of our lives really brought life, not just for us but also for our children.
My husband and I decided that with God’s help, we would not engage in premarital sex and other sexual activities while we were courting. It was very difficult at times but we loved God, each other and we loved the generations to come.
We also had God’s grace or divine empowerment.
You see, when you sin continually in a particular area, you are basically strengthening the Devil’s hold in that area of your own life as giving him access to the lives of your generations.
So we made ourselves accountable to mature Christians and friends who could ask us anything, we went for deliverance prayer where they dealt with issues of lust, especially relating to premarital sex and adultery. We also asked God to forgive our forefathers for their sins in this area and forgive us for any kind of lustful activity we were involved in.
On my mom’s side of the family, my grandparents and great grandparents really loved God and lived holy lives in Christ. I heard the story that my great grandfather, who became a Christian as an adult, prayed for all the generations to come, just before we went to be with Jesus. I believe that I am living in that spiritual blessing because of their lives. My siblings and I did not grow up in a Christian home, but all of us loved Jesus passionately from our youth!
The Good News is that through Jesus, our sinful nature can be put to death and we can live above sin.
This can even create a passion in our children and grandchildren to follow Jesus and live above sin!
Sometimes, you have to be the one to make some tough, painful decisions, and perform the necessary, difficult actions to stop the advancement of the strongholds of the enemy in your generation and the generations to come. You may have to be the one to say no to divorce, even though it seems easier because your parents did it. By your actions, spiritual warfare and wise living, you can break that stronghold.
You have to learn to access God’s grace and wisdom to stay in some situations for a while longer, instead of moving from the pot into the fire. I speak here about situations where I see Christian young women moving out of difficult situations at home to live with boyfriends and become caught up in sexual activity. (In some situations, persons should move out for their own safety, but please seek godly counsel and professional help if this is necessary).
Stand in Christ against lustful activity like premarital sex and adultery because it is not a part of your identity in Christ and it is destroying families.
Again, there is Good News; you are never standing alone once you are standing for righteousness! God and all His angels are standing with you!
I may sound like a bore at times, but people, ALL sin leads to “DEATH” and struggle in the long run, not just for us but for the generations to come out of us. If it is not right according to the Bible, please don’t do it…. no matter how “good” it seems, or if ‘it is saving you money’, or ‘it seems like it is not hurting anyone’. Trust me, Jesus can truly help you.
To all those who have stood in Jesus and have done the right things in spite of how unpopular and difficult it became at times, your reward is sure! Remember always these words found in
Don’t be misled; remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it: a man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows! If he sows to please his own wrong desires, he will be planting seeds of evil and he will surely reap a harvest of spiritual decay and death; but if he plants the good things of the Spirit, he will reap the everlasting life that the Holy Spirit gives him.”
