Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you–unless, of course, you fail the test? 2 Corinthians 13:5
What is this test? How do you test yourself? Maybe you have done a self-test on your eyes. You may have put one hand over one eye and try to read something with the other. Hopefully you can see!
No one likes to fail a test but, Paul tells us to test ourselves. Can you imagine writing an important exam where you were also the one correcting it. Wouldn’t you think that’s sure pass!
I believe the test itself is a test. It shows us where our hearts are at. If Christ is in you, you won’t want to sin and where you see sin you will naturally repent. However, if you love sin, you will cheat on the test. You would even give yourself a pass when you have failed.
The test Paul is talking about is whether Christ is in you or not. The apostle John gives us a great way of testing ourselves:
“And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:3-6
John goes on to explain what commandments he is speaking of:
“And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.” 1 John 3:23-24
So in light of all this examine yourself to see if you are walking in love.
Here is an example of the test of love:
You are a young lady and bought an attractive outfit. You go before the mirror and say, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all!” To which the mirror responds, “Your heart is not snow white for all of your chest is exposed!” You know it is wrong but still, you want the attention from the boys.
So, they watch you and lust after you and you are now happy.
How dwells the love of God in you? You comfort yourself by saying ” but everyone dresses like this!”
You are a young man and you are on a mall adventure. Like Samson you have gone Gaza to gaze. You find yourself watching women with lust. Deep down in your heart you know it is wrong but you comfort yourself by saying, “Just because a man is on a diet doesn’t mean that he can’t watch the menu!” Sadly, eventually most diet plans fail.
You say but I don’t know how to test myself or I can’t examine myself. That’s okay, it just means that God loves you and you need to be born again. If you are indeed born again, you have experienced grace and truth and you know what love looks like. Test yourself today.
